New luxury property developments in Malta are proving attractive to foreign buyers, the director of national estate agent Frank Salt has claimed.

Speaking to the Telegraph, Douglas Salt stated premium resort projects that offer a combination of high-end homes, commercial space and leisure facilities are popular with construction groups at present.

“Infrastructure and restoration initiatives such as the avant-garde remodelling of the Valletta Waterfront are also drawing fresh interest from overseas buyers,” he observed, adding Maltese banks continue to offer loans for foreign buyers.

The Mediterranean nation has endured a relatively mild recession and may be a popular destination for Britons considering taking out expat health insurance and moving abroad and John Cutugno of Homes in Malta noted 4.5 per cent of all residential properties in the country is held by foreign owners and a “large percentage” of this has been bought by Britons.

British nationals in Malta are eligible to receive free hospital treatment at the government-run Mater Dei Hospital, but a private medical insurance policy will be needed to cover private treatment.
