Property for Sale in Munxar, Gozo

Munxar is quiet, quaint village located on Gozo. It is within close proximity to Sannat, Victoria and Xlendi and a firm favourite with expats due to its central location, innocent charm and small size. The parish church is dedicated to St Paul and Munxar, as a village, is often described as having some of the most beautiful landscapes on Gozo and has been a favourite amongst artists due to the hues of colours that bathe the village, its buildings and the surrounding area during the summer months.

First noted as a settlement in the 16th Century, the name Munxar was derived from the word Monxiar (meaning bucksaw) and this connotation is linkedto the two valleys that run parallel from the village down to the sea and the neighbouring fishing village of Xlendi. People who live in Munxar are known as Munxarin and the village, together with Xlendi, initially formed part of Sannat. Some megalithic temple and Roman remains were found in the area surrounding or close to Munxar. The town’s most illustrious resident is surely Professor Joseph Aquilina, a local synonymous with the Maltese language and author of the Maltese/English dictionary. Munxar’s village feast is officially held on 10 February each year with much fanfare and celebrations.

Property in Munxar

When it comes to property offered for as for sale in Munxar, the supply is limited and sought-after due to the village’s tiny size. Residents also love living and owning a property here, sometimes for many generations…so those who get their hands on a property here can consider themselves very lucky indeed!

Munxar’s close walking proximity to Victoria, the capital of Gozo, makes it ideal for those that want a quiet village lifestyle but still want easy access to all of the modern conveniences a bigger centre has on offer. Here one can find a limited array of different classic property styles such as terraced houses, farm houses, the odd maisonette and houses of character. Apartment blocks have never really featured predominantly in Munxar and this has played a big role in its appeal as a charming, rural village. Recent construction on the outer limits of Munxar have witnessed some apartments being built and offered for sale, but as the village’s footprint is very small, its charming character will most likely remain intact for years to come.

When it comes to exploration, Munxar is a gateway to the valleys that lead from the village with some beautiful walking and foot paths available for nature lovers year-round. There are a few roads cutting through the village: one being a narrow, winding road that meanders down to the valley over a tiny bridge that spans the flow of the spring water that comes down from the village of Fontana. The spring flows all year, even during the driest of seasons and many farmers and locals come to collect water for their crops and gardens here. Other roads leading out of Munxar lead to the famous Sannap Cliffs and Xlendi, offering spectacular views along the way.
